Veneers vs dental crowns: which do you need?

Dr. César Rodríguez15 February 2026

One of the most frequent questions in cosmetic dentistry consultations is: do I need veneers or crowns? Although both can significantly improve the aesthetics of your smile, they have very different indications and are not interchangeable.

What are dental veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that bond only to the visible front face of the tooth. They are just 0.5-0.7 mm thick.

To place them, a small amount of enamel is removed from the visible face of the tooth (approximately 0.5 mm), which makes the process minimally invasive.

What are veneers used for?

  • Stained teeth resistant to teeth whitening
  • Teeth with an irregular shape or that are small
  • Small diastemas (gaps between teeth)
  • Mild enamel wear
  • Asymmetry of the smile line

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are restorations that completely cover the tooth, from the gum line to the occlusal (chewing) surface. To place them, the tooth must be prepared on all its faces, reducing its volume significantly.

What are crowns used for?

  • Teeth with extensive decay
  • Fractured teeth
  • Teeth treated with root canal treatment
  • Teeth with very large fillings
  • When the shape, size or colour needs to be changed more drastically

What if I want something in between?

If the tooth has damage on both the front face and the chewing surface, but it is not extensive enough to need a full crown, the Vonlay is an excellent alternative. It covers the occlusal face and the front face in a single ceramic piece, making it more conservative than a crown.

How to decide?

The decision depends on the condition of the tooth, the amount of healthy tooth tissue available and the goal of the treatment. At Debod Dental Clinic we carry out a complete diagnosis and present all the options transparently so you can make the best informed decision.

Both have a similar average lifespan (10-20 years) with good care. The difference is not durability but indication: a veneer improves aesthetics with minimal preparation; a crown restores a badly damaged tooth by covering it completely.

No. A porcelain veneer requires minimal enamel preparation (about 0.5 mm). We work conservatively to preserve as much healthy tooth as possible.

For those cases there is the Vonlay: a ceramic restoration that covers the chewing surface and the front face in a single piece, more conservative than a crown. At the assessment we will tell you which is the best option for your tooth.
